Glass pool fencing and glass balustrades in Sydney

Designer Glass Sydney supplies and installs glass pool fencing, glass balustrades and custom glass for homes across Sydney and up to about 50 km out. That covers frameless and semi-frameless pool fences, balcony, deck and stair balustrades, and splashbacks, shower screens and mirrors, built to NSW pool barrier rules and the National Construction Code.

What we install

Pool fences, balustrades and glass cut to size, measured on site and made to fit.

Most enquiries are one of three jobs. The first is a pool that needs a new fence, often because the old aluminium one has had its day, or the house is going on the market and needs a certificate of compliance. The second is a balcony, deck or staircase where a tired railing is coming out and glass is going in. The third is a kitchen or bathroom that needs glass made to an exact size, usually a splashback or a shower screen.

Each job runs the same way. You send the quote form with your suburb, the product and rough sizes, and we ask for photos when we reply. We measure the site before anything is ordered, because toughened glass can’t be cut or drilled once it’s made. The glass is made to size and fitted, and on a pool fence the gate is adjusted until it swings shut and latches from any open position.

We cover Sydney and about 50 km around it. That runs from the Northern Beaches and the North Shore down through St George and the Sutherland Shire, and out west through the Hills District and Parramatta.

The rules your glass has to meet

A pool fence in NSW is a safety barrier before it’s a feature. These are the NSW Government’s main requirements, and the standard that applies depends on when your pool was built.

NSW pool barrier

Minimum height
1200 mm from finished ground level
Gap under the barrier
100 mm or less
Gaps between uprights
100 mm or less
Non-climbable zone
900 mm arc outside, plus 300 mm inside
Boundary fence as barrier
1800 mm high
Gate
Self-closing, self-latching, opens away from the pool
Standard
AS 1926.1-2012 for pools built after 1 May 2013 and any modified barrier

Balconies, decks and stairs fall under the National Construction Code instead. Once a fall reaches 1 m you need a barrier, and the glass in it has to be designed for the loads it will take.

Balustrade rules

Barrier needed
Where a fall is 1 m or more
Floors and balconies
1000 mm minimum height
Stairs and ramps
865 mm above the nosings
Openings
No gap a 125 mm sphere can pass through
Falls over 4 m
No climbable rails 150 to 760 mm above the floor
Glass
NCC glazing provisions (AS 1288), loads to AS/NZS 1170.1

Your council or a private certifier has the final word on both, so ask them before work starts if anything about your site is unusual, such as a boundary fence that doubles as the pool barrier. The pool fencing page and the balustrades page go through each set of rules in more detail.

Where we work

Sydney and up to about 50 km out, from the Northern Beaches to the Sutherland Shire and west to Parramatta.

Common questions

What areas of Sydney do you cover?

Sydney and about 50 km around the CBD. That takes in the Northern Beaches, the North Shore, the Eastern Suburbs, the Inner West, St George, the Sutherland Shire, the Hills District, Parramatta and the west, and the South West.

How do I get a quote?

Fill in the quote form on any page with the product, your suburb and rough lengths or sizes. We'll ask for photos of the site when we reply. Nothing is ordered until the site has been measured, because toughened glass can't be cut once it's made.

Do you only do pool fencing?

No. Pool fencing is a big part of the work, but we also fit glass balustrades on balconies, decks and stairs, and make kitchen splashbacks, shower screens, mirrors and other glass panels to size.

Will my new glass fence pass a pool inspection?

It's built to AS 1926.1-2012, which applies to every new or modified pool barrier in NSW. Passing also depends on what sits near the fence. A pot plant or pump cover inside the 900 mm zone outside it can fail an otherwise sound fence, so we point those out when we measure.

Tell us about the job

Rough sizes, the suburb and what the glass is fixing into are enough to start. Someone who installs glass in Sydney will get back to you to talk it through.
